Conservative Councillors in Weston have welcomed the announcement that Oldfield School has been given official permission to become a mixed-sex academy. The news comes following a long campaign by local parents and residents in the area which Councillors Malcolm Lees and Colin Barrett have backed.
Councillor Lees (Cons, Weston) said:
“This is fantastic news for our local community and I know that parents throughout the area will be celebrating. Local residents have worked hard for many years to campaign for Oldfield to take local boys as well as girls, and this is something which Colin Barrett and I have wholeheartedly supported. Attending some of the numerous meetings organised by residents campaigning for a co-ed Oldfield demonstrated the strength of feeling amongst local people, so it’s great to finally have this confirmed.”
Cllr Colin Barrett added:
“Oldfield is an outstanding school which has benefited girls from Bath for many years, but it currently serves too many children from outside the local area. Making the school co-educational will ensure it educates the local children it is there to serve and I’m sure that many parents will choose to send their sons to Oldfield. I have no doubt it will flourish as one of the Government’s flagship Academies.”
