Success as temporary operator found for closed Post Office

01/02/2010

Local residents and Councillors in the Weston area of Bath are celebrating the news that after months of waiting, a temporary operator has been found to re-open the closed Post Office branch in the village.

Weston’s Conservative Councillors Malcolm Lees and Colin Barrett have been working with Post Office Ltd to re-open the branch since it closed suddenly in June last year. With delays continuing over finding a permanent Sub-Postmaster for the branch, Cllr Malcolm Lees has been pressing Post Office Ltd to re-open to old branch with a temporary operator until a permanent solution is found.

The Post Office has now confirmed that a temporary operator has been found, and an agreement has been signed with the owner of the old premises to re-open the branch at the previous location. It is hoped that the branch will be open within the next fortnight, with a date of the 11th of February pencilled in for re-opening.

Cllr Malcolm Lees (Cons, Weston) said:

“This is fantastic news for local residents in Weston. The time it is taking to find a permanent operator has been extremely frustrating for local people, and that’s why I’ve been pressing Post Office Ltd to find a temporary operator. I’m therefore extremely glad that Post Office Ltd has finally been able to do this, but I will be continuing to press them to find a permanent solution.

“I would also like thank owner of the premises, Abb Khateeb, for his efforts in helping to find this temporary operator and his assistance in readying the premises. I understand that Post Office will continue working on selecting a permanent Sub-Postmaster, but re-opening the closed branch, even on a temporary basis, will be of great relief to all the local people who rely on its services.”
