Larkhall Safer Route to School given go-ahead

29/01/2010

Local residents and councillors in the Larkhall area of Bath have welcomed news that a long-awaited new Safer Route to School scheme is set to go ahead.

Local Conservative Councillors Richard Maybury and Bryan Chalker (Cons, Lambridge) joined with local residents to call for road safety improvement at a busy cross-roads by St Saviour’s Infants and Junior Schools.

Plans for a new ‘raised table’ traffic calming scheme outside the schools on the junction of Spring Lane, Charlcombe Lane and Eldon Place have now been given the green light, after the plans received no objections. Work is due to start during the half-term holiday, from the 15th of February.

In addition to the traffic calming scheme, a new 20mph speed limit will also be put in place on the roads leading up to the schools.

The £34,000 needed for the plans was secured in this year’s Safer Routes to School budget after several years of campaigning by Lambridge Councillors Bryan Chalker and Richard Maybury.

Cllr Richard Maybury (Cons, Lambridge) said:

“Local residents will be extremely pleased that these road safety plans will finally be going ahead. We have been working to deliver this scheme for a long time, so it’s great news that work is now due to start. This junction gets very busy at rush-hours when many cars use it as a rat-run to avoid London Road, so it can be very hazardous for local children going to school.”

Cllr Bryan Chalker (Cons, Lambridge) added:

“The investment in the Safer Route to School scheme here is very welcome and clearly needed, it will make it much easier for parents and children walking to school. The raised surface, once in place, should ensure cars drive carefully in this area, and there will also be a 20mph in the area of the school to accompany this new traffic calming measure.”
